FUNGAL STUDY

Field trials were conducted in summer 2007 with a liquid formulation of the fungus Metarhizium anisopliae Strain 52 to further determine field efficacy at actual home sites. Preliminary results are favorable but all the data needs to be analyzed before conclusions can be drawn about its effectiveness.

Tick Management Handbook:
An integrated guide for homeowners, pest control operators, and public health officials for the prevention of tick-associated disease. ( By Kirby C. Stafford III, Ph.D. )

A copy of the Handbook may be downloaded in PDF format by clicking on the picture below or pick up a free copy at the Torrington Area Health District office, 350 Main Street, Torrington, CT 06790.

The tick management handbook (68 pages + cover) was developed as part of a community-based program for the prevention of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses. Printing of this publication was funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The handbook covers ticks of the northeastern United States, the various tick-associated diseases, Lyme disease in companion animals, personal protection measures (including how ticks feed, tick removal, and repellents), integrated tick management and the use of chemical acaricides to control ticks in the landscape. The section on tick management reviews landscape management, host animal management, and prevention of tick associated diseases in pets. Final sections briefly highlight organic land care practices and biological control as related to tick control. A selected bibliography of the scientific literature is also provided. Copies are free.
